Today, we’re diving into how bidets keep themselves clean. Since bidets are designed for personal hygiene, they’re bound to get a bit dirty over time. For those unfamiliar with bidets, the idea of maintaining them might seem complicated, but many features make this process quite easy and nearly effortless.
I recently wrote an article covering some of the best self-cleaning bidets. These bidets, available across a range of prices, come with capabilities like wand rinsing and even spray wand sterilization or toilet bowl cleaning after every use.
Do Bidets Clean Themselves?
Most modern bidets have some level of self-cleaning functionality, with self-cleaning wands being one of the most common features. Some higher-end models even have sensors that activate automatic toilet bowl cleaning. Standalone bidets generally keep themselves clean using flowing water, and certain models also use solutions that sanitize both the spray wands and the toilet bowl.
There are various types of bidets, and most incorporate some self-cleaning element. Below, we’ll discuss the most common features of both modern and traditional bidets that help maintain cleanliness.
1. Self-Cleansing Wands (Seats, Attachments, Toilets)
A popular feature among modern bidets is the self-cleaning wand, found even on bidet attachments that connect to existing toilets. These attachments are typically non-electric and lack many features available on bidet seats or toilets.
However, self-cleaning wands are present in most bidet seats and toilets on the market today. Usually, the wand extends and retracts with a burst of water that rinses it both before and after use.
Even though the wands aren’t often exposed to contaminants, since they retract during use, splashes and unpredictability in bowel movements can occasionally cause them to get dirty. Thankfully, most bidets are equipped with this function to keep things clean.

2. Pre- and Post-Misting Functions (Seats and Toilets)
Another helpful feature is the pre- and post-misting function, which is typically marketed as a pre-mist function but often works both before and after you sit down. For example, the TOTO C100 bidet, a favorite of mine, has this feature, which sprays a non-corrosive cleaning solution into the bowl to keep things clean and fresh. Higher-end models may even perform cleaning both before and after each use.
TOTO’s “ewater” solution, a type of electrolyzed water, serves as a disinfectant and non-corrosive cleaner, breaking down chemicals in tap water to sanitize.
3. Automatic Timed Cleaning Functions (Seats and Toilets)
Certain bidets are also programmed to clean themselves automatically at set intervals, such as every 8 hours when not in use. This is a great feature even for traditional toilets, as it helps maintain cleanliness and prevent stains, reducing the need for frequent manual scrubbing.
4. Free-Flowing Water (Standalone Bidets)
Standalone bidets, common in Europe, have flowing water that helps keep them clean. These units, typically located next to the toilet, are mini washbasins that can either shoot water like a fountain (French-style) or have a faucet-like flow. Because you usually clean yourself first with toilet paper before moving to the bidet, they don’t usually get too dirty, but occasional manual cleaning is still necessary.
5. Retractable Wands (Seats, Attachments, Toilets)
While not a direct self-cleaning feature, retractable wands also help maintain cleanliness by preventing exposure to urine or feces during use. They only extend when needed, staying out of the way otherwise, which helps prevent contamination.
Are Handheld Bidets Self-Cleaning?
Handheld bidets aren’t self-cleaning, but since they’re typically stored to the side of the toilet, they don’t get exposed to contamination. However, the nozzle might need to be cleaned occasionally, especially if it comes into contact with water in the bowl. On the plus side, handheld bidets are very affordable.
Conclusion: How Do Bidets Stay Clean?
In summary, most modern bidets stay clean with self-rinsing nozzles, with some even featuring self-sanitizing wands. Regardless of the type of bidet, occasional manual maintenance is recommended, but features like self-cleaning wands, pre-misting, and automatic cleaning cycles make bidet ownership hassle-free. Even standalone and handheld bidets require minimal effort to keep clean, thanks to their design.
